The present market optimism has largely been fueled by the assumption that the real estate market has touched the bottom and the economy is on a growth trajectory. More importantly, market experts argue that the major reason has been the current ability to lock in very low long-term interest rates. Profit taking by bond investors on the Federal Reserve’s recent announcement to purchase US treasuries, on the back of growing economic outlook, has caused a hike in interest rates in the fourth quarter. In spite of the recent jump in the 10-year treasury yield by nearly 80 basis points, it has remained lower than December 2007.
